Description
Dated 1989. An oil painting on canvas board in a gilt-effect frame; a good likeness of Lord Louis Mountbatten (25 June 1900 - 27 August 1979), informally in navy jumper against a seascape with skerry; signed bottom right corner 'Trina 89', old exhibition label to reverse naming the painting to 'T. Ansell' and the subject. 3.9 kg, 77 x 90cm (30 1/2 x 35 1/2"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired Reeman Dansie sale, 14th August 2012, Lot 157. Lord Mountbatten was killed by a bomb placed by the Thomas McMahon of the IRA in his small fishing boat Shadow V at Mullaghmore, County Sligo, Eire, together with other members of his familly killed or injured and Paul Maxwell, a local resident who was also present that day; the painting is likely to portray Lord Mountbatten against an Irish coastal background as he frequently holidayed at Classiebawn Castle.
