Description
French School (Third Quarter 19th Century), "Portrait of George Sand (1804-1876) in a Camicie Rosse (Garibaldi Jacket)", oil on canvas laid down on paperboard, unsigned, 29-3/8" x 23-3/4". Framed.
Condition
There are three small scattered losses to the pigment - two to the proper right elbow, and the third to the upper left quadrant. There is a whitish accretion/scratch to the left of the right arm. The painting exhibits a 2" x 1" area of inpainting to the far left center near the column's edge, and possibly smaller scattered spots of inpainting along the left edge of the canvas. The latter "inpainting" is difficult to determine due to the several layers of varnish that impeded much of the UV light. The painted surface is not homogenous; light bulging (raised bumps) is present from the fixative with which the canvas was laid down.
