Description
Continental School: c.1840 oil painting.
This dramatic antique oil painting is full of amazing details. Sunlight cuts into the scene like a spotlight, showing all the main characters: a mother and children, birds on the roof, a group of people in a boat, Two men in another boat, gulls in the water, chickens in the yard.
One of the men in the boat is smoking a pipe, and smoke also appears from the chimney of the tile-roofed house. All of the details are reminiscent of Rembrandt's dramatic lighting and love of showing daily Dutch life.
The scene appears to be Dutch, and is painted in the "Continental School" style popular in France, Belgium and Holland in the 19th Century. The date of this unsigned painting is circa 1840.
The painting has fine craquelure all over, showing its age. It is in stable condition and has been cleaned and coated with a non-yellowing varnish.
The frame is possibly from the early 1900's, and appears to have been custom made for this painting. The frame has a few unobtrusive flaws where ornamentation is missing, but is otherwise in good antique condition.
