Item Details
Description
Map of the United States and Canada. Daniel Burgess, c1846. Drawn and engraved by Stiles, Sherman & Smith. 10.5 x 17.5 inches. Three tiny holes in center fold from publisher’s binding strings. 5” centerfold tear at bottom repaired with archival tape. Two other small edge tears also repaired with archival tape. Foxing evident throughout. Well centered.

Detailed historical map shows the United States at a particularly interesting and rapidly changing period. Published c1846 and shows the new state of Texas in its first full year of statehood and with the large boundaries prior to the Compromise of 1850 reduction. Indian tribes are well located throughout the map. Interesting atlas school map with full original hand coloring to delineate the early territorial borders. Each state or territory is labeled with its population. Territories of Washington and Oregon extend to the Continental Divide. Entire Southwest is part of Mexico and is mostly covered by information panel. Huge Nebraska Territory extends between the Continental Divide and Minnesota and is bounded by Canada and Texas. Indian Territory does not have a panhandle as that region is part of Texas at this time. While the copyright date is 1839, the map shows an oversized Texas with the stovepipe panhandle and the information block at left indicates Texas is a state, thus the c1846 date. The Indian Territory is rarely seen in this configuration and includes part of present-day Kansas. Within Texas major cities and towns are identified with the population shown as only 200,000. A very unusual historical map. Nebraska Territory shown here would change a great deal, eventually becoming part of Wyoming, the Dakotas, Montana and Nebraska. A note appears in the region of the Black Hills (Nebraska Territory) stating that it contains a “Valley through which a loaded wagon may pass.” The Oregon Territory includes present-day Idaho, Washington and Oregon.
