Description
An original oil on canvas depicting an eighteenth-century urban street scene of the Muiderpoort in Amsterdam signed "H. Keun" in the lower right corner.
Painting captures the daily life of 18th Century Holland: a man walking his dog, laundry laid out to dry in the lawn, a windmill in the background, a two-horse carriage, a bridge over a canal in the distance, with an expansive sky filled with fluffy, white clouds. Painted by Hendrik Keun, Dutch (1738-1788). Keun was an 18th-century painter from the Northern Netherlands. He was born in Haarlem. According to the RKD his cityscapes were inspired by Jan van der Heyden. According to another biographer he was inspired by the Berckheyde brothers. His view of the Zijlstraat in Haarlem was engraved for the city of Haarlem. He died in Haarlem.
Painting was purchased from art dealer Bernhard Houthakker in Rokin, Amsterdam in the 1950s or 1960s. An elaborate 18th century carved gilt wood frame with ornate volutes on corners crowned with a floral motif.
