Details: This lot consists of an authentic Irish WWII Service Medal from our Civil War Estate Collection.

The Seirbhis Naisuinta Service Medals were issued in Ireland during the period of 1939-1946, known as "The Emergency." This lot features the "An Forsa Cosanta Aitiuil," which is the service medal issued to soldiers in the "Local Defence Force" or regional volunteer reserve. There were approximately 103,000 men in this division at its peak.

The piece is nicely framed in wood on a field of green felt and protected by glass.

"This medal series was instituted on the 6th October 1944 but was not issued until after the cessation of hostilities when production and issue commenced in 1947. The series has a common obverse but eleven different reverses and two ribbon types. The obverse shows a female figure representing Eire, left facing in a flowing robe and cloak. She is straining a wolfhound with her left hand and her right hand holds a long sword facing downward. Above and around her is the inscription "RE NA PRAINNE" translated as "Emergency Period." This lot is from the estate of a very well-known and well-respected lifetime Civil War collector in Upstate New York.
