Description:
Two title leaves, including one with a vignette engraving, 52 pp. Additional engraved title page preceding plates. 70 engraved plans and views and 28 (of 30) lithograph views. (Folio) 58x41 cm (22¾x16¼") old mottled boards. First Edition.
Remarkable series of views of Cairo. Coste was an architect in the service of Mehmet Ali from 1818 through 1827. He was an instrumental figure in a number of projects including the Mahmoudieh Canal, the telegraph line from Alexandria to Cairo, and the reconstruction of the defenses at Aboukir. Original published in 15 parts, rarely encountered complete, the present copy lacking 2 of the lithographs. Blackmer 415; RIBA 709; Brunet II, 322.
Condition
Formerly in the non-circulating holdings of the Denver Public Library, with bookplate inside front cover, stamp on vignette title and one other plate, faint ink stamp "DPL" on top edge of text block. Binding detached, in pieces, and well worn; a bit of wear to preliminary leaves, first title detached; some chipping, creases, and tears to tissue guards, light foxing; internally very good, an excellent candidate for restoration.
