Condition: Very Good-Excellent. Very good color, slight toning. Few foxing spots in the ample margins. Centerfold.

This map of Mississippi and Alabama, plus much of Louisiana and Arkansas, shows great deal of detail as to early settlements, roads and topography. Mississippi is yet to have direct access to the sea (today’s Gulfport and Biloxi). Counties and Indian areas, which are named, are shown. It is a lithograph from volume 5 of van der Maelen's Atlas Universel, issued as separate, unbound sheets of maps. This monumental work was the first atlas of the world with all maps on the same scale (a large scale at about one inch to 26 miles) and the first lithographed world atlas. If all the maps were joined together they would form a globe of 7.75 meters in diameter (such a globe was made in Brussels). And, as such, many maps don’t function well individually, with this map being one of the exceptions. There was only one edition of this scarce atlas, published in 1825-27, and the subscription list shows that only 810 copies were sold.
