Description
Hallmarked in London in 1871 by renowned Stephen Smith, this Antique, Victorian, Sterling Silver coffee or teapot is in the "Cellini" style, first made popular by the famous 16th century Florentine silversmith Benvenuto Cellini. The upper portion is beautifully chased with the typical Cellini decoration of masks, animals, strap-work and flutes, with a caryatid ornate scroll figural handle and removable lid with dolphin finial. The lower portion having a scenes depicting the Roman Goddess, Diana, the huntress, arrows, crescent moon, deer, hunting dogs, and woodlands. This pitcher is particularly large and heavy gauge silver, weighing as much as some 4 piece sets and the tray beneath them. Hallmarked English silver (925 Standard), London, year 1871 (q), Maker's mark S.S (Stephen Smith, King st, Covent Garden). Measures 13" H x 11" W x 8" D. Weighs approx. 2030g, 4.5lbs, 66ozt. Provenance: Originally owned by the mother of actor Robert Horton, and then Robert Horton himself- purchased from the estate of Robert Horton. THIRD PARTY SHIPPING REQUIRED. Edit Nov. 10th: We were able to track down the wife of late Robert Horton who, remembers the teapot distinctly and is providing us with a letter to be included with the piece.
