Description
A scarce and superb Viennese map of the Gulf of Mexico and Central America on one self-contained sheet (from Schraembl's four-sheet North America map, based on the important 1783 Bowen & Gibson map of the continent). The map encompasses western Cuba, Florida, the Gulf Coast, Mexico from the states of Sinaloa, Durango, and Nuevo Leon south, the southern tip of Baja California, and Central America to Costa Rica and part of Panama. An inset map of upper Baja California and northwestern Mexico focuses on Father Kino's discoveries and confirmation that California is a peninsula not an island, as had once been believed. The highly detailed sheet shows the routes of the Spanish treasure galleons in the Caribbean.
