MARGARET MAY DASHIELL (VIRGINIA / LOUISIANA , 1869-1958) RICHMOND, VIRGINIA GENRE PAINTING, watercolor on paper, a fine view of aged Confederate veterans on parade with onlookers, signed, dated, and inscribed "M. Dashiell / Memorial Day Monroe Park / 1919" lower right. Matted and housed under glass in an old frame. Together with another watercolor attributed to the artist, depicting a woman, child, and African-American nanny in a park-like setting before a large Georgian-style house, no signature located, matted and housed under glass in an old frame. Circa 1919. Each 10" x 13 3/8" sight, 14" x 17 1/4" OA.
Each in very good visual condition with minor toning. Mattes with discoloration. Not examined out of frames.
Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: Born in New Orleans, Margaret May Mitchell is most often identified with Richmond, Virginia, where she studied with Edward Valentine and spent most of her career. A painter, illustrator, lithographer, lecturer, and writer, Mitchell contributed often to magazines and authored two books, "Spanish Moss and English Myrtle" in 1920, and "Richmond Reverie" in 1940. The present examples demonstrate her abilities as an illustrator to capture telling detail.
