Leaf from a Maghribi Qur'an, with verses 39-47 of surah Ali'Imran (III, Family of Imran) mentioning Jesus and Mary, in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on parchment [Maghrib, mid-thirteenth century] Single folio, single column with 10 lines in sepia maghribi (written space 140 by 135mm.), decorative gold circular and trefoil devices marking the verses, diacritics and vocalisation in blue and red, tear with loss to inner edge along lower margin, reverse a little faded with some loss to text in final line, leaf 190 by 190 mm. This chapter of the Qur'an concerns the family of Imran (Jaochim), considered to be the father of Maryam (Mary) in Islam, mentioning Isa (Jesus) as well as Imran's mother Hannah (St. Anne). The passage on the verso of this leaf describes the moment the angels tell Mary that she has been chosen by Allah to carry Jesus: "The angels said, 'O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah]' .
