Hendrik Kruseman Van Elten (Dutch/New York, 1829-1904) oil on canvas landscape depicting a figure on horseback watching over a group of cattle as they rest along a tree-lined river bank. Signed in lower left corner. Larchemont Art Shop label en verso. Housed in a gilt wood frame. Sight - 24 3/4" H x 41 1/2" W. Framed - 30" H x 46 3/4" W. Biography: Hendrik Kruseman van Elten was born in Holland. He studied landscape painting in Haarlem with Cornelis Lieste, and arrived in the United States in 1865. From 1866 until 1900, he exhibited paintings at the National Academy of Design. He was named an Associate at the institution in 1871 and an Academician in 1883. Many of his landscapes are set in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)
Condition
Yellowed varnish layer. 1/2" puncture to upper left quadrant, heavy craquelure throughout. Flaking primarily to the lower left quadrant ranging from 1/8" to 1 1/4". Several significant areas with losses and inpainting evident with black light: 8"L x 2 1/2"W area center above cows; 2 1/2"L x 1"W area right bank near center; 9"L x 2 1/2"W area below cows in center; 1 1/2" L x 1"W area on left bank; 3 1/2" x 4"W left edge. Minor loss with overpainting to frame.
