A PAIR OF PALACE LIONS ON PEDESTALS
Item Details
Description
Blanc de Chine porcelain made in Dehua and wood. China, Qing 18th cent.

Two outstanding mirrored renditions of shizi lion dogs in finest white porcelain, each with an offspring and on a porcelain pedestal surmounting another elaborately carved wooden pedestal that is also antique. Very expressive fierce heads which prevail in the overall appearance, mellowed by the wide blazing tails and the offspring. There are two young on the left lion, one playfully climbing on its back, the other secured under the raised front paw. The partner lion only has one offspring below his paw, here also with a slightly less fierce expression. A brocade ball behind the offspring on the ground respectively. The tightly adjoining porcelain pedestal is smooth on the sides, with the exception of an ornamental spiral- and ribbon motif on the front. The black wooden pedestals are deep openwork and offer rocky terrace platforms, stylized flowers as well as lingzhi, which are considered the mushroom of immortality in Daoism. 德化獅子一對. 中國, 清代, 18 世紀. 高 21 厘米, 寬 26.5 厘米.

HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 21 CM, WITH 26,5 CM

From the collection of Juergen L. Fischer, Ascona

Condition reports and further images are available upon request

The renowned collector of Chinese porcelain Juergen L. Fischer lived in Ascona, located in the Swiss Kanton Tessin at Lago Maggiore. The extensive size of the collection is largely owed to the family's fortune, secured by pharmacist August Fischer and his revolutionary invention - the world's first adhesive made from synthetic resin, the famous "Uhu Alleskleber", developed in 1932. Juergen L. Fischer lived until 2013 and was an avid collector of Chinese porcelain whose astonishing taste encompassed a broad spectrum of types, of all sizes and with origins spanning across millennia. Juergen Fischer passed on his comprehensive knowledge in numerous text books - among others, his large and very instructive book about the art of Chinese snuffbottles and also an antiquarian's guide to Chinese art.
