Civil War Sword with Scabbard Ð Model 1860 US Staff
Item Details
Description
US Model 1860 Field and Staff OfficerÕs Civil War Sword with Scabbard | The sword is highly decorated and has a Snake Skin leather wrapping on the Handle | The sword is 37_ in length | Very Good Condition. The sword and scabbard are highly decorated throughout: The pommel is decorated with an eagle and Federal Shield, with a blank tablet (possibly for optional initials) on the reverse. The front clamshell shows the American eagle with arrows and olive branch in its talons surmounted by the Federal Shield in front of a stand of colors. The back clamshell has the Federal Shield in front of a trophy of arms and oak and laurel branches. The outward side of the blade is etched with floral sprays, stands of military trophies, and ÒU.S.Ó initials in block letters at midpoint. The reverse side is the same, except the ÒU.S.Ó is replaced by an American Eagle with federal shield. The guard and scabbard ring furniture have floral sprays, and the drag at the scabbard tip features a stand of colors on one side and a star on the reverse. This sword is a giant move away from itÕs predecessor the Model 1850. It is lighter sword much easier to handle than the Model 1850 wrist breaker. As with most of the patterns which existed prior to the Civil War, it was carried by officers on both sides (with obvious differences in markings). This sword is based on a French pattern of the same era (as are most US Models). It has a brass hilt with a dark leather grip bound by twisted brass wire (there is a variation with brass hilt, shagreen grip, and gilt wire). The most notable characteristic of the hilt are the ornately decorated ÒclamshellsÓ on the guard. Additional Identification and Measurements: The Brass hilt is 5-3/8_ in length from cross-guard/blade intersection to pommel (where tang is peened); winged eagle on a single non-folding outside clamshell-guard (some are known to have double-clamshell guards) with chevron in center of eagle on a background array of flags (a similar scene appears on the pommel). Black leather-wrapped grip with 13 wraps of double-strand twisted-brass wire; The Blade length is 28_ and is decorated with a draped-flag motif, winged eagle, with US in a panel on the opposite side of the eagle.
