Longfellow's first published book of poetry, in its large paper format and bound by Boston bookbinder Peter Low, who did several presentation bindings for Longfellow. Voices of the Night, a collection of almost 40 poems, was first published in an edition of 900 copies in 1839. Once it had quickly sold out Longfellow made corrections for a second edition, and copies of that edition printed in this large paper format were designated as the "Third Edition." According to Longfellow's journal, 200 copies were issued in this format.
