Description
Marajo Island, Brazil, ca. 500 - 1400 A.D. Pottery pubic cover of the female natives from the Island of Marajo at the mouth of the Amazon. Originally, this triangular form was suspended by fiber tie cords sewn through the three corner holes and worn on ceremonial occasions. The finely painted geometric images on the face of the cover are regionally specific to areas of the island and depict murcielagos, caiman, and other icons in their designs. These likely would have been the sole coverings, outside of elaborate body painting, that a woman of the Marajo culture would have owned. Custom bronze base. Dimensions: 4-1/4" L x 4-1/8" W; Weight: 9.8 oz (w/base)
Condition
Restoration to both upper corner tips and some refreshing to the decoration.
