Description
Monumental Japanese Meiji Period Cloisonne Charger, late 19th c., top surface with image of a crane flying above the waves and with smaller birds below, surrounded by a panel of bamboo, cherry blossoms and sparrows, and with outer rim with geometric diapering in blue, green, and red over yellow, exposed bronze edge, reverse side with double fan shaped panels containing floral motifs, and wind pattern over turquoise field, interior base panel with central cartouche depicting a crane falling into the waves under a blood red moon, standing on a 2" footed rim, 36 3/8" diam., 4 7/8" high overall. Nickel sized chip out of base cartouche background, foot drilled to accept a 19th c. hanging bolt, hairline crack in upper right hand quadrant where foot meets the body of the plate.
