TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Southern provinces of the United States'
The map shows the United States including the first 17 states to acceed, including Tennessee, which had joined in 1796. Ohio, Louisiana and Indiana, which had all joined the Union by the date of publication of the map are not shown as states. The present-day state of Florida is shown divided into West Florida and East Florida. The boundary line of the "Treaty of 1795" is marked; the border established what became known as the Greenville Treaty Line, which was for several years a boundary between Native American territory and lands open to European-American settlers. Native American Indian villages and tribal areas outside the United States are marked.
