Description
J.E. Caldwell & Co (American (Philadelphia), founded 1839), Gien Factory (French, founded 1821), Japy Freres & Cie (French, founded 1771-1970) circa 1855. A faience porcelain mantle clock, the case by Gien in pink camaieu and white ground, the circular enameled dial with pink Roman and Arabic numerals and signed by the retailer "J.E. CALDWELL & Co Philadelphia" within a glazed and gilt metal beaded bezel with a laurel decorated surround above a Cupid putto in raised relief flanked by colorful leafy branches, the sides decorated with a floral trophy emblematic of harvest. The back side of case stamped underglaze "A" and "Gien" the first mark with the three towers (1856-1860). The circular glazed gilt metal back cover stamped "1380" enclosing the time and strike movement stamped "1380 7 7" with medallion "Japy Freres & Cie Gde Medaille d'Honneur" (circa 1855) and the bob stamped Thieble, the other side marked "R A" and numbered "1380". Approximate height 15.37", width 8.37", depth 5.12".
