3 volumes, 8vo (236 x 149 mm). Color-printed folding route map, 7 single-page maps, numerous wood engravings throughout. Contemporary brown half morocco gilt. Provenance: William Frankland (prize inscription).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH describing Austria's first and only circumnavigation, the "last great scientific expedition of the nineteenth century" (Borba de Moraes). Over two and a half years, the Novara sailed over 51,000 miles and called at 25 maritime countries making geographic, ethnographic and scientific studies.
