Description
4.04 x 5.03, Last quarter 19th century, Nazmiyal is pleased to have purchased a fine Kuba rug from the historic Doris Duke Collection. Her collection set records with the sale of a rare 17th Century Silk Isfahan carpet, selling for $4.4 million dollars, the most expensive rug ever sold at auction. Doris Duke used her wealth to pursue a variety of interests, including extensive world travel and the arts. As such, she was able to develop a keen eye and became one of the most important collectors of the 20th century. Her passion for art and travel enabled her to buy exotic carpets, many highly unusual and rare. Her vast collection of art and carpets were housed in Hawaii ('Shangri La'), Beverly Hills, California ('Falcon's Lair'), New Jersey ('Duke Farms'), and in Rhode Island ('Rough Point'). Some of her properties are now open to the public while others were sold to benefit the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Doris Duke foundation for Islamic art (Shangri La).
