Title: Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nord-America. Publicaiton Date: c1836 Cartographer: J.E. Woerl Publisher: Bromme, Traugott Size: 18Height - 25.5Width Additional Information: Entworfen von J.E. Woerl. Guide book map (by J. E. Woerl, a reputable German cartographer) dissected into 12 sections and laid down on canvas. Lacks slipcase. Used with the guide book by Traugott Bromme issued separately. This map was part of a two map archive belonging to a German family who emigrated to Pennsylvania in the late 1830s or early 1840s. The companion pocket map of the same vintage and size showed their journey across Germany en route to the U. S.The map shows Texas at its largest extent as a republic. This state of the map with "Neu Mexico" including panhandle of Texas actually appears to be during the maximum extent of Texas to Big Horn at North Platte River. Adjacent to Texas lies "Arkansas" in what is now Oklahoma (without panhandle). This area is open-ended to the north. Adding to the complexity, "Arkansas Territory" is the name given to what is now the state of Arkansas. This is a great oddity, which we have never seen before.Since the mapmaker must have thought "Arkansas"(in larger letters) had replaced Arkansas Territory, the date must be after June 1836, when Arkansas actually received statehood. Further corroborating the 1836 date is the fact that Michigan is still a territory. Michigan became a state in January 1837The map shows the penchant for Germans to show the names of native tribes, including Comanches in Texas, Apaches and “Nabajoas†in present-day Arizona and dozens more. Texas is fairly detailed with three dozen place names, including a blue-bordered "Goliad od. Bahia" north of Refugio.Mexico extends north to "Oregan Terr." and east to the Rio del Norte. Sparse details above the Gila River and "Oregan"except for missions along the upper Colorado River. Most of the population hugs the coast of "Neue Californien". Southern Arizona shows "S. Maria" (Tucson) and "Tumacueopi" on the Rio Santa Maria. Tubac is misplaced on the Rio San Pedro. An important German map of the pre-Texas Annexation/Mexican War period. Browned and dust soiled
