  • Date: 1861 c., Boston
  • Cartographer: L Prang Co.
  • Size: 21 X 27.3 in.
  • Additional Information: This is a superb and exceedingly rare early Civil War pro Union broadside. While not directly stated, this broadside has a lot to do with the Union strategy to choke supply lines from Europe to the Confederacy primarily via blockading the ports. It shows important southern harbors of Charleston, Pensacola and Norfolk, along city maps of Washington and Baltimore and key railroad routes of the US. Details include Forts Sumter, Pickens, Monroe and Mc Henry. The portaits shown include R Anderson, who commaned Fort Sumter as a Major at the outbreak of the Civil War, General W Scott, a hero of the War of 1812, who shaped the early Union military strategy, including the noted blockades of the Southern ports, as well as A Jackson and President A Lincoln. Interestingly, all four men are natives of southern or border states. L Prang was a printer and publisher, who emigrated from Prussia in US, and became known as the father of American Christmas cards. He also published a few maps and broadsides, such as this. Only one institutional/library copy is known of this broadside and it is not in the Library of Congress.
