Description
AN AMERICAN VICTORIAN OAK MERCHANT'S COUNTER TOP DESK, CLARK'S SPOOL COTTON, NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, 1879-1896, in the Arts and Crafts taste, the back shelf fitted for quill and ink storage, over three cubby holes, fronted by a slanted inset green baize work surface, lifting to interior storage, over four drawers with gilt foil decals, raised on a molded plinth base, verso trademark labels. In the early 1860's, Elias Howe and Isaak Singer started to produce various ranges of domestic sewing machines, which laid the foundation for the machines used to the present day. Clark's sewing threads were among those recommended for use with these machines. The American branch of the Clark empire became known as Clark & Co. in 1879. In the 1880s, for example, the Clark company developed a six-cord soft-finished thread called "Our New Thread", which became known as O.N.T."
