Gen. Robert C. Richardson III (1918-2011), namesake of his father 4-Star Gen. Robert C. Richardson, Jr., who commanded the U.S. Army, Pacific (Hawaiian Department) during the height of World War II, was an officer, first of the United States Army Air Corps, then with the United States Air Force, eventually attaining the rank of Brigadier General. A leader in the early days of the U.S. Air Force, he was a renowned expert in tactical nuclear warfare, NATO, and military long range planning.

Gen. Richardson's Defense Superior Service Medal with ribbon and clasp is in the presentation case and includes the lapel pin and ribbon bar. Established in 1976, the Defense Superior Service Medal is a senior American military decoration of the Department of Defense, awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who perform "superior meritorious service in a position of significant responsibility." Also present is his Air Service Medal with ribbon and clasp.

In April 1945, Richardson was in command of the 365th Fighter Group, "The Hell Hawks," at Fritzlar, Germany. He led the unit in their support of General George S. Patton's final push into Germany then transitioned the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter group from wartime to peacetime operations. Upon the redeployment of the 365th Fighter Group back to the United States in September 1945, he remained in the Occupation Forces as chief of the Aircraft Allocation Division, Headquarters, U.S. Air Forces in Europe. He was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight, the Army Commendation Medal awarded to members of the Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service, and the Legion of Merit given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. In all, there are three bars, each with three ribbons attached.

From the Family of Gen. Robert C. Richardson III.
