David van Hoogstraten, son of the publisher, translator and poet Francois van Hoogstraten and Hester de Koning, studied medicine in Leiden and then worked as a doctor in Dordrecht . In 1685 he married Maria van Nispen (16631708). They had nine children (five died at a young age). After their marriage, Van Hoogstraten became a teacher at a Latin school in Amsterdam . In 1694 he became deputy there until 1777, due to physical complaints, he was dismissed with honor and with an annual salary. Two years later he fell into the water in the fog and died eight days later, 66 years old.
