Jack Kerouac Author and Painter! Although he was mostly known as the voice and author of the "beat" generation, Kerouac was also an artist who created numerous works of art in various mediums. This lot offers Kerouac's personally owned handmade art tote, hand-crafted using a trimmed Bacardi Rum Box, with a makeshift jute rope handle which wraps about the box. Stuffed with Kerouac's art supplies, and accessories, including (but not limited to): Watercolors, Brushes, Chalk, Crayons, Clay, Gold and Silver paint, and a small lamp. Note, the contents are vintage, and are original to Kerouac, as such the contents are well used and loved, some dried out, others still usable. An ecletic mix. Provenance: This Art Box will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executer of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife. As relayed to John Shen-Sampus by his father, John Sampus, Jack Kerouac would carry this box of art supplies around with him when preparing to paint or draw.

Shen-Sampas said that, while Kerouac was never really known for “his artistic endeavours in painting and drawing”, when he died he “left a trove of portraitures, drawings and sketches behind”.

According to Shen-Sampas, Kerouac’s artistic leanings emerged when he was just nine years old and he drew his first self-portrait. He later said that he would rather be a painter than a writer, and when he was writing, he filled his notebooks and journals with sketches and doodles.
