Item Details
Description
Spanish single-edge sword, 28 ½" blade, 33 ½" overall, likely late eighteenth or early nineteenth-century, with a grip of black horn with geometrically-decorated brass pommel and collar, with a"three bar"Â iron basket-style handguard. The ricasso of the curved blade bears the archaic Spanish inscription"Por My Ley Y Por My Rey"Â ("For My Law and For My King"Â). The reverse ricasso bears a second inscription, although it is illegible due to oxidation. Both sides of the blade also appear to be engraved with spears, flags and other martial designs, although these too are very indistinct. The blade bears a dark patina overall, with patches of heavier oxidation, pitting and many chips to the edge approaching the tip, while the grip shows some chips, else very good.
