Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) was America’s most prolific--and arguably its most important--inventor. His 1,093 patents span the fields of electricity, printing, telecommunications, and motion picture and sound recordings, as well as a myriad of other technologies. The industrial complex pictured here is Edison's West Orange, New Jersey lab. Designed in 1887 by architect Henry Hudson Holly, the research facility was comprised of more than twelve buildings including a library and machine shops.
