Document, signed
Washington: July 28, 1862. Folio on vellum. (measurements). Document signed by Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War, appointing William Ludlow as aide-de-camp. With engraved vignettes and paper seal. Docketed at upper left recto. Manuscript contents moderately faded and browned, signatures clear and legible. Window mounted and framed with a portrait of Lincoln, a bronze presidential medallion, and a descriptive plaque. Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was an American statesman who served as 16th President of the United States from 1861 to 1865. He famously led the Union to victory during the American Civil War, before he was assassinated in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth.
Edwin Stanton (1814-1869) served as Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln, and organized the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln’s death.
