Description

1783 Faustin Or the Philosophical Century, Illuminati Novel, Very Rare

Johann Pezzl is considered a radical, anti-clerical enlightener who was compared to Voltaire in his day.

Pezzls satire based on Voltaire's Candide is considered the most important educational novel in Josephine Vienna. His writings were banned and had to leave Bavaria.

He is considered an important Viennese enlightener, topographer, and moral sign, who also contributed to the development of Austrian national awareness.

From 1776 he studied law at the Benedictine University of Salzburg, which was enlightened. There he met Johann Kaspar Riesbeck , who introduced him to other enlightenment writings and introduced him to Bavarian Masonic and Illuminati circles.

Between 1780 and 1783 his letters from the novitiate appeared in Zurich, in which he countered the world-facing monasticism with an enlightened, cosmopolitan bourgeoisie.

It was immediately banned in Kurbayern.

The radical, anti  clerical enlightener Johann Pezzl 1756 to 1823 comes from Mallersdorf near Straubing and had his letters from the novitiate in 1780 and 1783 as a settlement with the monasticism that he had with the Confronted with an image of an enlightened, mature bourgeoisie and immediately had to leave Bavaria.

He fled to Zurich, where his main work here, the novel Faustin appeared, which can be described as an Illuminati novel.

When a commission of inquiry was also investigated against him in Salzburg in 1780, he went to Zurich and in 1783 also published his then, widely read novel Faustin or the philosophical century, which can  be described as an Illuminati novel, Helmut Perl.

The title hero finds only church intolerance and philosophical lack of freedom on an educational trip through Europe.

Pezzl had been living in Vienna since 1784, where he initially looked after the library of Wenzel Anton Graf Kaunitz . In 1785 he entered the Masonic Lodge Zum Palmbaum and also belonged to the circle around the Masonic Lodge  Zur vertr Eintracht  by the Viennese Illuminati Ignaz von Born .

He also traveled in the Greiner salon, in the circle around Caroline Pichler.

In 1791 he became an official in the court cipher office.

Pezzl's later writings and books deal primarily with Vienna and Austria.

His late writings, of course, criticized the Enlightenment and Josephinism sharply.

The title vignette shows a reading childlike faun with staff and goat feet, behind him a sheet of paper fluttering in the wind with the inscription 1780 drapes over a branch.
