Description
This lot consists of a framed acrylic painting on board, rendered in the abstract expressionist style of Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956). A hand-painted inscription, "Pollock", can be noted at lower right corner of composition. This dynamic image depicts a many-layered collage of organic shape. A tumbling inferno of color that laces across itself countless times; a veritable feast for the eyes. This handsome painting would be a highlight to any modern art collector's gallery. Overall approx. 18.5" x 43.5"; image sight approx. 14.5" x 39.5".
Reverse side of piece features several stamps, which include the phrases, "New York", and "Jackson Pollock". Also various numbers and an ink stamped reference number.
Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956) was a hugely prolific artist of the mid-20th century, whose "drip painting" (sometimes called "action painting") broke ground for countless artists - from Helen Frankenthaler to Morris Louis, Frank Stella, and many others. He was deeply influenced by the writings of Carl Jung, the paintings of Janet Sobel, and the indigenous art of North America. Today, Pollock's work lives on in a blaze of legend, movement, and critical debate. This was exactly his intention.
Pollock's wife, the artist Lee Krasner, once offered an anecdote that seems to say it all: "Pollock used to give his pictures conventional titles ... but now he simply numbers them. Numbers are neutral. They make people look at a picture for what it is, a pure painting."
