1703 The Foundations of the Spiritual Life, Drawn from the Imitation of Christ
Les Fondemens De La Vie Spirituelle, Tirez Du Livre De L'imitation De Jesus-Christ - Nouvelle Edition
This work was translated into English in 1844 by one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement, Edward Bouverie Pusey 1800 to 1882 as The Foundations of the Spiritual Life, Drawn from the Imitation of Jesus Christ.
Though he is not credited in this edition, the book was authored by Jean-Joseph Surin, 1600 to 1665, a French Jesuit mystic, preacher, devotional writer, and exorcist.
He is today remembered for his participation in the exorcisms of Loudun in 1634 to 37.
Surin enjoyed great celebrity for his virtues, his trials, and his talents as a spiritual director.
French bishop and theologian Jacques Benigne Bossuet, 1627 to 1704 declared him consumed with spirituality.
At the suggestion of the fathers of the Province of Aquitaine, assembled in provincial congregation 1755, the father general ordered Surins name inscribed in the Menologe de l'assistance de France
