Description
Jewish WWII modern art signed oil on canvas painting by Eric Isenburger. Some minute paint loss on the bottom edge and a few minor spots on the dress. Frame 29"h x 10"w and painting 28.25"h x 9.25"w. Eric Isenburger 1902 (Jewish) Frankfort, Germany - 1999 NYC. He was active and loved in NY known for his modern figures, portrait and still life. He studied at the Frankfort, Germany art school. He met his wife, Julia Elenbogen in 1927 and married in the same year. A year later in 1928 they moved to Vienna where an entire year of artwork and dance began. In 1931 they moved to Berlin Germany where it was still an important place for art. His art was successfully exhibited in Berlin. However several articles appeared about Isenburger and his art in the National Socialist press and people began attacking his work in 1933. Julia and Eric left Berlin in a hurry; heading the advice of his gallery owners (Wolfgang Gurlitt) that they should take a short vacation abroad. Their exile led the couple to Paris, Stockholm and Nice. There in southern France Eric was imprisoned as a German national. With the help of Thomas Mann under dangerous circumstances he left in 1941 to NYC. Julia gave up dance and was a model. Eric exhibited at the national academy of design in 1942 , won the Edward Palmer Price in 1945, 1957 & 1970. Also exhibited at the Art institute of Chicago 1942 & 1945, McClees Gallery (solo) 1943 one man show, Corcoran Int. Gold medal 1943-45, 1947, Whitney museum of modern art 1944, Penn academy of fine art 1944-1953, Cincinnati art museum 1945 and many other museums including Metropolitan Museum of art Knoedler Gallery New York City 8 solo exhibits. He taught painting at the national Museum in New York City of design for many years ; he died in New York City in 1999. Eric's art is on permanent exhibit at the Museum of modern Art in New York City Corcoran Gallery New York City Pennsylvania Academy of fine art IBM encyclopedia and many more museums around the world.
