Description

Henry Longfellow ALS for a Book Gifted to Him: "...and shall take the book with me to read and enjoy at leisure."

3pp of a bifolium, measuring 3.875" x 5", Cambridge, Massachusetts, dated June 30, 1875. Addressed to an unnamed recipient, likely Samuel Adams Drake, regarding receiving the gift of a book. Boldly signed "Henry W. Longfellow." The letter reads in full:

"My Dear Sir,

I have had the pleasure of receiving your beautiful volume, 'Nooks and Corners of the New England Coast,' and hasten to thank you for it. Tomorrow I leave town for a week or two in Maine, and shall take the book with me to read and enjoy at leisure. I am sure it cannot fail to be very interesting. Meanwhile accept my cordial thanks and my best wishes for its success in every way.

Yours Faithfully,

Henry W. Longfellow"

The letter is accompanied by a postcard decorated with a drawn image of the Longfellow Monument erected in Portland, Maine. The letter has flattened mail folds. With toning and mat burn throughout. Light soiling at the folds and edges. With small separations at some of the fold edges. Boldly signed.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet, most famously known for his work entitled "Paul Revere's Ride" and "Evangeline". He taught at both Bowdoin College and Harvard College before retiring from teaching in 1854. He then set about focusing on his writing and moved to live out the rest of his life at George Washington's Revolutionary War Headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Samuel Adams Drake authored and published the book mentioned in this letter in 1875. He worked as a journalist and writer before joining a Kentucky state militia in the Civil War. He rose to the position of brigadier general of militia in 1863, survived the rest of the war, and went on to continue his literary career.
