A George II inlaid and veneered burl walnut tall case clock William Scafe, London, circa 1750

The hood with stepped sarcophagus top with three brass steeple finials, frieze and spandrels with carved blind fretwork, the arched brass face engraved, "William Scafe London," with applied brass spandrels, the case with arched door, line inlaid detail, on molded base, the case door interior retaining paper label advertisement for William Scafe.

Note

William Scafe was born at Bushey, near Denton (York). His shop was located on King Street in London, near Guild Hall. In 1721, he became a member of the Clockmakers Company, and eventually gained leadership in 1749.

includes two weights, pendulum, three brass finials, winding key, and two case keys; in good condition overall, presents nicely; the top molding on the right-facing side of the case detached, but present; lacks bottom board, and base board on back side; the case and hood with expected signs of wear to veneer commensurate with age: puckering and bowing (particularly to side panels of case), some occasional splitting and losses, and some evident patches; right-facing side base panel and molding to case lifting slightly- separation and splitting along corner seam; case door retaining original label to interior; the door hinges possibly re-set; the case door surrounding with some gaps from shrinkage; face remains bright overall; finials appear to be old; as with all mechanical objects, Freeman's does not guarantee functionality for clocks
