A BRONZE 'ELEPHANT HEADS' ARCHAISTIC VESSEL Qing Dynasty Raised on tripod feet formed as elephant heads terminating in ruyi heads, the body with lappet and diamond pattern decoration, the rim set with two rope-twist handles, the interior inscribed zi zisun sun yong. 26cm (10 1/4in) high Footnotes: 清 銅衝天耳象足爐 《子子孫孫用》款 Provenance: An English private collection prior to 1976, described in a letter of that date from Professor Roderick Whitfield of the British Museum. The inscription on this vessel is based on the formula found on Shang dynasty bronzes, zi zisun sungyonbao yong (子子孫孫永寶用) 'may sons and grandsons ever treasure and use'.
