A wonderful modernist depiction of a man chopping wood in the forest with various animals in the background between the tree trunks. Part of an edition of 30, but un-numbered.

NOTES / REFERENCES: George Claude Leon Underwood (1890 - 1975). British artist, primarily known as a sculptor, printmaker and painter. He was the eldest of the three sons of George Underwood, a fine art dealer. From 1907 to 1910 he attended the Regent Street Polytechnic in London before studying at the Royal College of Art for three years. In 1925, with some of his past pupils, Underwood created the English Wood-Engraving Society. His works are held in many important museums including: the Courtauld Institute of Art, London (39 works); the Tate Gallery, London (8 works); the National Portrait Gallery, London, (4 works); the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, archive of 206 drawings and sketches; The Brooklyn Museum (three works).
