Qualitatively superior to nature, and qualitatively superior to sanitation; produced in usibus potationis, balneationis. Francois Aquisgrani Blondel (Aachen, Germany), 1688 5 3/4 by 7 3/4 in size. The physician François Blondel (1613–1723) wrote a rare and thorough book on the mineral springs and the healing properties of the water in Aachen and Burtscheid, a little village between Cologne and Aix. The treatise included several amazing healings. Several in-text pictures, an author portrait, two folding plates (a map of Aachen and a view of Burtscheid), and an allegorical engraved title with the coat of arms of Aachen at the back are all charming illustrations. - Krivatsy Reference 1393. Special Vorst, page 122. - Wellcome II:182. - VD17 23:239697E. Half sheep, paper covers, raised bands on spine, 19th century. In excellent condition. Latin text. The promotion of these springs' medicinal properties was the lifelong mission of the Flemish physician François Blondel (1613–1703). The springs have been known to offer relief from rheumatism, gout, and scrofulous illnesses since Roman times. In 1666, Blondel took over as the springs' inspector and established a drinking course for the mineral water. Blondel's advocacy of the springs also gave the city of Aachen, which was severely damaged by fire in 1656, a significant revenue stream.
