Description
Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience amulet of Taweret (also Tawaret, Thoueris, Tauret, Apet, Opet), the goddess of child birthing and suckling as well as protector of women, children, and the weak. The amalgam deity presents in a striding pose with left leg extended atop an integral rectangular plinth, her arms held tightly against her sides, and her exposed breasts draped down the front of her chest. Her hippopotamus-form head features a lengthy snout with flared nostrils, petite eyes, and a slender neckline framed by the lappets of her wig. Covered in thick layers of turquoise-hued patina, this is a fine example from ancient Egypt! Size: 0.5" L x 0.3" W x 1.5" H (1.3 cm x 0.8 cm x 3.8 cm)
