Description
Ren Xun, Crene, Hanging scoll. Ren Xun (1835-1893), also known as Shunqin and Fuchang, was a painter in the Qing Dynasty. His father Ren Chun and brother Ren Xiong were both painters. He lost his father when he was young, so he learned painting from his brother. When he was young, he made a living by selling paintings in Ningbo. In 1868, he went to Suzhou with Ren Yi, and later lived in Suzhou and Shanghai. Ren Yi and Ren Yu both studied painting from him. Chen Hongshou, the same teacher as his brother, often uses ancient hairsprings, iron wires, flowing clouds and flowing water, and orchid leaves to depict the characters. Ren Xun was rigorous in his studies and worked hard on sketching and copying. Ren Xun also works on figures, flowers and birds, landscapes, portraits, and ladies. His painting methods draw on the strengths of others, with diverse appearances and full of innovative ideas. He was friendly with Gu Wenbin's son Gu Chengxiang and once designed Yiyuan. In 1888, at the age of 54, he became blind and died of illness in Suzhou. Together with Ren Xiong and Ren Yi, he was known as the "Three Ren", and jointly as the "Fourth Ren". He was one of the representative painters of the Shanghai School of Painting.
