Zhang Zhidong, Calligraphy couplet. Hanging scoll. Zhang Zhidong (September 2, 1837 - October 4, 1909), whose courtesy name was Xiaoda, also known as Xiangtao, and Xiangyan. In his later years, he called himself Old Man Baobing. He was originally from Nanpi, Zhili Province (now part of Nanpi County, Cangzhou City, Hebei Province), and was born in Liudongqiao, Guiyang, Guizhou Province. He once served as governor and was called "Shuai", so people at that time called him "Shuai Zhang Xiang". Together with Zeng Guofan, Li Hongzhang and Zuo Zongtang, he was also known as one of the "Four Famous Officials of the Late Qing Dynasty and Zhongxing". An important official of China's late Qing Dynasty and a representative figure of the late Westernization movement.
