Description
The largest and finest we have encountered! Late 19th century. 16 3/8” overall. 10 7/8” copper blade finely hammer formed with tapered raised medial, delicately chamfered edges and six pin formed (not drilled) circles to the tip. The field in opposing offsets resulting in a step up opposite a step down, to the broad edge. The borders of the steps with a broad band of parallel incised lines. The depressed area, each side, incised with a hatched and cabled motif. The top of the raised medial with similar motif. Wood hilt of characteristic form executed in exaggerated proportions with rounded blade seat on ribbed support over cylindrical grip. Huge bun shaped pommel with flared edge “hat” form terminal. Hilt finely inlaid with bands of tiny pewter rectangles in various patterns echoing the blade decoration. The wood with fine rich patina. Few small strips of inlay to the “hat” rim lacking, otherwise fine with no other loss to the wood or pewter. Blade with wonderful deep copper patina.
