Description
Pen and dark brown ink on laid paper, grove of trees, attributed* to/in the manner of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). Signed, lower right. 12 x 8 5/8 inches. Very good overall condition, having no apparent damage or repairs. Unframed for inspection and shipping.
Provenance: The present drawing was apparently purchased from Mark Nixon and his long-time business partner, Baron Herbert Hischemoeller van Kamphuyzen (of the Netherlands and Beverly Hills, California). Nixon built the famous "Kasteel Kamphuyzen," a 6,000 square foot home in Beverly Hills, California, naming the home after his partner, the Baron van Kamphuyzen. Van Kamphuyzen, who died in 1991, immigrated to the United States in the 1940's, presumably bringing art and antiques from his family's estate in Holland. He became a U.S. citizen in 1946. Van Kamphuyzen, who was educated at Eton in England, was an aide to Lord Baden Powell, and later became honorary consul general of the Ivory Coast. The consignor's family was friendly with Nixon for more than 30 years and the present offering is believed to have been acquired directly from Mark Nixon by a member of the consignor's family, now deceased.
