Description
Lost wax cast brass, punched sheet brass and craved wood. Late 19th or early 20th century. Benin, Africa.
This sculpture is quite complex with the figure in two pieces (joined at the waist-line) held together with a long threaded rod, fastened underneath by a brass nut to the wood throne. The wood throne is beautifully constructed, carved and detailed. There are four sheets of stamped and punched brass on the sides of the throne. The figure is also finely detailed with an expressive face and body. Hammered incised, filed and smoothed
Both the figure and wood throne have developed a rich patina over the past 100-150 years.
