The Roman epic poem De Bello Civili (On the Civil War), often known as the Pharsalia, was written by the poet Lucan. It describes the civil war that broke out between Pompey the Great's armies and Julius Caesar's army. The Battle of Pharsalus, which took place in 48 BC close to Pharsalus, Thessaly, in northern Greece, is mentioned in the poem's title. This fight, which takes up the all of the seventh book of the epic, saw Caesar soundly defeat Pompey. Although translator J. D. Duff claimed that "no reasonable judgment can rank Lucan among the world's great epic poets" in the beginning of the 20th century, he did point out that Lucan's choice to reject divine intervention and minimize supernatural events in the plot makes the work noteworthy. As noted by critic Philip Hardie in 2013, the scholarly assessment of Lucan's poem and poetry has since evolved: "In recent decades, it has undergone a thorough critical re-evaluation, to re-emerge as a major expression of Neronian politics and aesthetics, a poem whose studied artifice enacts a complex relationship between poetic fantasy and historical reality."
