Description
[CIVIL WAR]. WHEELER, Major General Joseph (1836-1906). A Revised System of Cavalry Tactics, for the Use of the Cavalry and Mounted Infantry, C.S.A. Mobile: S.H. Goetzel & Co., 1863.

Small 16mo, approx. 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 in., paper-covered boards (significant wear, including chipping, loss, spine reinforced with tape). 38 numbered plates, 6 leaves of printed bugle music preceding the index, one publisher's ad leaf (heavy spotting, soiling, staining to contents, chipping, creasing, rear free endpaper partially detached). Parrish & Willingham 5116. Provenance: Confederate Sergeant Wilmon B. Newell (front pastedown with period identification in ink, "Wilmon Newell").

Wilmon B. Newell served with Company G, 3rd Virginia Dragoons. His daughter served as president as well as chair of the educational committee for the Richmond Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and she published Flags of the Confederate States of America.

Gallantry displayed at the Battle of Shiloh earned Joseph Wheeler the first of many significant promotions in the Confederate Army. He rose from the ranks as lieutenant colonel to general. He also served as a general for the reunified United States in the Spanish-American War. Beyond the battlefield, he was a representative for the state of Alabama and served seven subsequent terms.
