Sale 2016 - Rare & Important American Posters
On Thursday, October 14 Swann Galleries will conduct an auction of 100 Rare & Important American Posters. The works, from three fine private collections, comprise an unprecedented snapshot of turn-of-the-century American advertising art. From 1893-1899 American posters caused a sensation in the U.S. and Europe, with exhibitions, competitions and magazines fueling collectors' desire for them. The majority of American posters from this era advertised literary magazines, and eventually became more popular than the publications themselves. By 1900, the magazines had adopted poster-like graphics for their covers, and the craze ended-its brevity adding to the rarity of these items. Featured artists include Will Bradley, Will Carqueville, J.J. Gould, Jr., Maxfield Parrish, Edward Penfield and Louis J. Rhead.
