Childress Gaffney Glass Paperweight Auction
Dedicated to a scholar and connoisseur with a passion for nature, music, the arts, and family. Collecting paperweights grows and becomes a lifelong passion. A paperweights collection can reflect nature, personal taste, style, theme, color, technique, maker, and other themes. The well-known French writer Colette decorated her apartment in the Palais Royale with paperweights. Collette chose only what enchanted her and the sight of these ?small frozen gardens? never ceased to bring her great joy. Queen Mary, King Farouk, Truman Capote, Robert Guggenheim and many other infamous personalities have been serious collectors. Paperweights were first created when France was going through a period of political agitation after the French Revolution. Expensive luxuries such as table sets, chandeliers, and crystal vases remained unsold. In addition, years of poor harvests and the Revolution of 1848 greatly affected the financial climate of the time, further pressuring demand for luxury goods. During that period, Mr. Launay, of the firm Launay-Hautin and Company, insisted on the making of weights which were moderately priced and easy to sell. The earliest major English paperweight collector was Mrs. Applewhaite-Abbot who built a collection of several hundred paperweights between 1900 and 1938. Three hundred paperweights from her collection were sold at auction for $90,000 by Sotheby?s in 1952. According to her records she paid as little as two shillings and not more than 26 pounds for any one of these weights. Paperweights continue to awe, inspire and delight collectors.
